El SurRead statement
The name of this sculpture refers to “The School of the South” founded by the artist Joaquin Torres Garcia.
I recycled the bricks from the fallen walls of the 17th century church of Sao Luiz do Paraítinga, which had been devastated by a flood in 2010. The step structure represents the flow of a river and the fish the figure of Christ.
It’s important for me to work with local people and together find the perfect balance between abstraction, geometry and references to natural shapes. Creating deep human connections and interactions is what allows the magic to emerge.
As Torres García says, “The South is our North”.
